The largest yellow bass ever taken in Kentucky (1 lb., 1 oz.) was caught in the waters of Lake Barkley.

CRAPPIE: Crappie fishing is fair on both lakes. Crappie can be found at the creek mouths on ledges near brush in 15 to 25 feet of water and can be taken on live minnows.

BASS: Smallmouth fishing is fair on Kentucky Lake using jigs or white 1/2oz spinnerbaits fished on main lake flats and points in shallow water. Largemouth fishing is fair to good on both lakes. Largemouth can be found on the main lake points and flats in 5 to 12 feet of water. Spinner baits, jigs, and plastic worms have been productive.

BLUEGILL: Bluegill fishing remains fair on both lakes using red worms or crickets fished on points or in shaded areas such fallen trees or boat docks inside the creeks in 4 to 10 feet of water.

WHITE BASS: White bass fishing is reported as fair to good on both lakes. Whites and yellow bass can be found on main lake humps and ledges near the river channel and can be taken on jigging spoons and rooster tails in 10 to 25 feet of water. These fish are more active during times of current. Be sure to watch for the gulls feeding in the same area.

SAUGER: Sauger fishing is fair on Kentucky Lake using large live minnows fished on main lake gravel bars and creek mouths in 15 to 20 feet of water. Trolling crank baits on the main lake gravel bars has also been productive.

CATFISH: Catfish fishing is good on Kentucky Lake using cut shad, night crawlers or shrimp fished in 35 to 50 feet of water on the main lake near the river channel.


FISHING TIP: The fishing is changing fast as the water cools . This has made for better crappie fishing in shallow water in the backs of some of the larger creeks on Kentucky Lake. There have also been good reports of bass being taken on surface lures near shore in shallow water on points. White bass fishing remains good in front of Lake Barkley Dam on the flats during times of current.
